A Special Visitor to Room 10

We had a special visitor come into a very empty Room 10 while we were chilling out on our last day.  A very perplexing moment exists.

The Last Day

The last photo of the class minus the absentees.

Go back and have a look of the same photo from the beginning of the year to see how everyone has changed.

Nepia Day Out at the Havelock North Pools

On the last Friday of the year, Nepia House all walked to the village for a day of leisure. After  seeing the movie 'Goosebumps,' we all spent the afternoon having a great deal of fun, cooling off in the Havelock North Pools.  We had a pizza lunch delivered to sustain us and then the afternoon was ours.  It was a great way to enjoy ourselves while spending the time with our mates.

Just hanging about...Charlotte, Pippa, Robyn and friend,

Jaime, about to go!
Ready, steady... go!

Sapphire, about to make the big splash!

Jack, readying himself to jump in.

Jesse, on the steps of depth!

A sea of arms and legs all in action for the floating boards.

The girls having successfully achieved 'ownership,' for a short while.

Hannah and Allyssa cooling off in out of the sun.

Kayla and mates recharging themselves near the end of the afternoon.

Room 10 Masterchef Winners.

In Room 10 we have some very talented chefs. Well done to Charlotte and Pippa for their first placing and Allyssa and Will for coming third. We may see these talented chefs winning Masterchef in the future.

Honours Badge Recipients

Brodie and Candice proudly show their Honours Badges, which they received in late November.

Completing a Mystery Story

After Ms Moratti had read most of a story called 'The Boy at the Door', the students had to write how they thought it would end. We had been looking at the concepts of a narrative using the mystery elements found in this genre.

Jaime has included them in her story ending and then left her reader up in the air...waiting.

Walt: add details to explain and finish the mystery.

I looked at his face which gazed longingly at the hidden box. “Who are you?” I demanded. Yet again he seemed to ignore me. I just stared now, needing to know what he wanted, why he was here, who he was. He stepped closer, I still hadn’t heard a noise from him. Another step, he was almost above me. I wanted to scream, to run but an invisible force held me in place. The weight of it was crushing me, compressing me into a small ball. The boy stepped closer, so close I should of been able to hear his breath. But his breath was not present. But now I couldn’t breath, the pressure was unbearable.

Cool air hit my lungs. I woke up gasping. My mind was fuzzy, but images of that boy still lingered. My breathing steadied and I found myself checking the toys. But something was wrong. Something was different and I couldn’t tell what. Edging away from the box I saw that the box had moved. It definitely wasn’t there before. It might of only moved 10cm but I know that I didn’t put it there. My hand reached out to open the box slowly creeping towards it, my curiosity running wild.

A floorboard creaked somewhere close and my head darted up to scan the area. No one was there, just an empty room cast shadows. I looked at my surroundings, just a plain room, a room you could see in just about any house. Out the corner of my eye something moved, a blur bouncing around in the shadows.

Extension Maths: Using Parallel LInes

The Extension Maths class were been working on angles within parallel lines.  They discovered that they really only needed to find the size of one angle and then they would be able to work out every other angle between two parallel and one transversal line.

This was the video link they watched to endorse their understanding.

Calculating the volume of a cone: Extension Maths

The Maths Extension class has been learning how to find the volume of rnage of 3 dimensional shapes and composite 3D shapes.

Robyn's example explains how to calculate the volume of a cone using a mathematical formula.

Robyn's Hyperbole

We hae learnt what a hyperbole is and how they are used.
The class realised that they have been using them but did not realise that there was a special name for the exaggeration they were using in their speech and written work..
Now they know!

Word Art related to The Unexplained

After showing the class an example of art made up entirely of words, I asked them to create a piece off work that reflected something that they could not explain.  These are just some of the examples.  I was delighted to see the outcomes of their efforts.

Reading in Room 10 / the library.

This is what reading can look like in Room 10 when you are fully grossed in a book and totally unaware of anything around you.

This photo has the subject's permission to be shared on th class blog. Thanks J....

Tech. Group 10B in music.

The group 10B have just started to learn this piece.  It is rather impressiveto see how well they play together with only a little practice.

Science in Room 10.

As part of our forensic science work, we looked at ways of deciding what different white powders were.  The class were given nine powders to sort and classify.  They ranged from cornflour, Epsom salts, laundry detergent to sugar and salt.
Each group was encouraged to use their senses (somewhat carefully with tasting) to describe and label. It was an interesting exercise to see who was familiar with pantry indredients.

Vincent is looking very closely the white powders his group have to analyse and name.

Amber checking out her unknown powder.

Kayla and Hannah testing to see if their powder reacted with vinegar.

Youth Futures Day

On Thursday we had the Youth Futures Day.
We had fourteen different employers and organisations come to HNI to show and explain to us what they jobs involved.  The Hastings District Council had quite a few different career options to show us, ranging from recycling to Youth Development organisers. Higgins digger operating was popular, along with the Armed Defense speaker.

Many students were impressed with the two engineers who shared their knowledge and skills about bridge building.  Both the ladies were able to explain clearly to the listeners how the construction of the bridge impacted on it's strength.

Alyssa wrestling with a wooden chair, trying to put it together.

Akayla aiming at a wooden frame with the fire hose.  Such power!

Hannah trying to keep her hands still in order to move the tool in her hand, around the wire. It was not an easy feat.

Jesse giving the finishing touches to the planter box he helped to create. The box now contains plants for HNI  students to enjoy.

Hannah trying to wrestle with a piece of wire in order to attach it to the fence post.

Vincent and Juan talking to the engineers about the different construction of bridges. They were impressed by the strength of an arch bridge.

Sapphire in control of a digger.  She managed to lift out six bottles in one scoop from the trough.

The Cultural Exchange with Masterton Intermediate School

Masterton Intermediate School welcomed H.N.I on to their school after the 3 hour long trip on the bus. I was surprised how many students there were, around 120 people they had almost and we had only 75 people in our whole cultural exchange.

Everyone from Choir, Orchestra and Kapa Haka from both schools were sat in Masterton’s Hall. ‘Kihkihi’ came up on screen and the introduction entered our ears. The low and high parts came in at different times. After going through our combined item the different groups split up.

Our Choir practiced our individual pieces, while Masterton decided what songs they will be singing. We then joined together and practiced the combined choir item, ‘Think Of Me’.

M.I.S and H.N.l Kapa Haka went to Solway Primary to perform/ practise. Then went back to M.I.S to grab our bags to go back to Mawley Park and unpack.

Everybody got changed and we walked out of Mawley Park to go ten pin bowling. After an hour of ten pin bowling we went back and ate dinner which was pizza and lasagne. Everybody got ready to go to M.I.S  yet again, for our formal performance in front parents and family from Masterton.

In the morning at Mawley Park, we were all very sad because it meant we had to leave in a couple of hours. We were being rushed out of our cabins, packing everything we had, onto the bus.

The Talent quest begun with their rock band not knowing that one of my fellow friends (Diamond) were in the band. I was cheering him on the whole time, the principal made us have singing competitions after each performance. It was near the end of the talent show and it was Jaevarn’s turn to sing and I was singing along the songs with him.

H.N.I had to evacuate the hall but it was to hard to leave behind all the friends that we had made, I almost had tears watering down my face on the way out to the bus with Masterton following behind us. I nearly didn’t get on the bus because I was too busy saying my good byes and paying my respects to My fellow Masterton students that I made in the past two days.

Mrs Hurley called at me to get in the bus, while I found my seat,M.I.S was doing the haka and I was doing it with them to stop me from being sad and crying, but it didn’t help. I was sad the whole way back home.

CSI at HNI

Displaying CSI at HNI.JPG

On Monday Senior Constable Lock talked to Nepia House about his role in solving crime in Hawke's Bay.  He enthralled the House with the methods he uses to solve crime from collecting DNA to analysing footprints.

He had set up a crime scene for us to all look at to try to recognise the clues he had left for us. It was intriguing that some of us missed some of the evidence but others were able to identify them easily. It made some of us aware as to what we see as important, others look at in to totally different perspective.

There were some fantastic questions as the afternoon  progressed.  Senior Constable Lock certainly helped us to consider the ideas in the work that we are doing on forensic science in class.

Enjoying the sun on our backs while we read and eat at interval.

During interval we all spend time reading from a range of sources and texts.  At the moment there are quite a few students reading from an app called 'Wattpad'.

Some students prefer to browse through the Internet on sites such as Wonderopolis, Dogonews, Stuff.com where they can read nonfiction material.

From today onwards there are a few more options with an array of novels being included in the class library of resources. These are part of the novels we have for our reading programme.  We will be discussing our books in Literature Circles and considering other peoples' perspectives on the books..

Candice's Cheerleading Achievement

A few weeks ago there were auditions for New Zealand's international level 4.2 cheerleading team to go to Hawaii next year. In cheerleading there are 6 levels, Level 1 (little kids), level 2 (intermediate age) level 3 (high school), level 4 (internationals going overseas for comps), level 5-6 (worlds, biggest cheer comp ever); as the levels get higher the stunts get harder and more complicated.cheer.jpg

I went to the tryouts, I was very Nervous but I had Sahmara (room 13) trying out for it with me and we got to work in the same stunt group which calmed my nerves a bit. We had to do stunts we had never even thought about doing before, they were so fun and exhilarating!

All week we had been doubting ourselves while we were waiting for the results to see who got in.
Every morning and afternoon I kept pestering mum to check her emails but there was nothing until one Friday afternoon when mum gave me the most exciting news ever… I’m going to Hawaii next year for cheerleading!

Pointilism Art

This art work was created by Sam using the old style of Pointillism. He made it by using cotton buds
dipped in a range of colours to help to create the depth and detail in his scene. It is very much like a Rembrandt picture judging by the colours he has chosen.
